Defending champions Kashima won the promoted club, Sapporo. Another league favorites Urawa was beaten by Yokohama F-Marinos in Nissan Stadium of J.LEAGUE's third record 61,246 attendance. Gamba Osaka, winner of Pan-Pacific Championship beating Bechham and the associates, was supposed to be already in the best-form, but ended scoreless draw.
